American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) Credit Card Review

3.9 / 5

Whichever American Eagle credit card you get (theVisa or the store card), you’ll receive a healthy first-purchase discount and solid ongoing AEO rewards. Plus, there’s no annual fee. So if you’re a fan of American Eagle Outfitters, you should definitely have an American Eagle card in your wallet.

Here’s what you need to know before you apply:

  • You need Good credit to get the Visa. There are two American Eagle Credit Cards: the American Eagle Visa Card and the American Eagle Store Card. You need good or excellent credit to get the Visa and only fair credit to get the store-specific version. But it doesn’t really matter which one you’re approved for, as both are only worthwhile for AEO purchases. Nevertheless, you can check your credit score for free on WalletHub.

  • Solid rewards. In addition to 20%off your first American Eagle or Aerie purchase, the AEO credit cards offer 15 points per $1 spent at the two brands’ store locations as well as on AE.com. The American Eagle Visa also gives you 5 points per $1 spent elsewhere. That might not sound like a lot, given that the average rewards card offers a bit more than 1 point per $1 spent. But it actually works out to 1% to 15% back, considering that 1250 points are redeemable for $5 in-store credit. That’s not the most rewarding package among retailer-affiliated packages, but it’s still pretty good.

  • Average interest rate. Both American Eagle Outfitters credit cards charge interest at an annual rate that is just above the store-card average of 30.16% and nearly double the 18.04% average among credit cards for people with excellent credit, according to WalletHub research. So you don’t want to carry a balance from month to month with either American Eagle credit card.

  • No annual fee, but foreign use will cost you. The AEO credit cards don’t charge annual fees, but that’s more of the rule, rather than the exception, for retailer-affiliated plastic. Still, it’s good news. Less appealing for people with good or excellent credit who plan to either travel abroad or make purchases through international merchants is the American Eagle Visa Card’s 3% foreign-transaction fee. Considering that a credit card is the best way to save money on currency conversion, those who fit that description should make sure to get a no-foreign-fee card.

They decreased my credit limit from $1500 to $310 with zero notice or reason. I shop there often and always pay my card on time, if not early. Because I was completely unaware until I went to pay my next bill, my credit score dropped 24 pts (since a $299 balance is a HUGE credit usage when you only have $310 to spend). So, I paid off the card and will no longer be using it. Oh, also they made this decision the day after one of my bigger credit cards gave me a $1500 increase. Makes no sense to me.

Stay away from this card! Excellent credit and several other credit cards and this is by far the worst one to have. Not only is the APR 22% yikes but they do not back the consumer. If you have a dispute you will have to sell off your first born in order to fight them. They want document after document after paperwork before they will credit back a fraudulent charge. I made an online purchase and never received the goods and for months they continually ask me to provide a receipt and a notice from the retailer stating they would refund me. Wth?! How can you provide a document that never existed in the first place? You can see the charge and nothing ever was delivered. You want a card that protects you, not a card that protects the merchant

Super high APR. I wish they would have chosen a different bank for their card because Synchrony is absolutely terrible. They close your account for any little thing. I would be very careful when thinking about your credit with them. Won’t recommend

The worst credit card i have ever had, the low your credit score for nothing. Always pay my bills on time, only one time i forgot and pay double to correct the error. The decrease my limit and i dont use the card very often. Im waiting to cancell my card. not even in the 50% of credit line. Also they have horrible clothes, bad quality, and no variety. I even speak to a lady call Anny she was useless, they never let me know about the decrease. I prefer other cards such as TJ mAx.

The issue with this card is the lack in limit increases. Though they upgraded me to the Visa the credit line didn’t go up. I did use this card to start building my credit and that did well. Be sure to pay in full at 12/15 day point.

There are big errors in the review when evaluating the rewards offered by this
card. It offers 30 points/$1 ( 12% back) on purchases at AEO and Aerie (40 points/$1 or 16% back at level 3), and 5 points/$1 (2% back) on other purchases. The rewards for jeans are double: 24% (32% at level 3). This card is much better than 3.9 / 5.
