Andy Katz breaks down his 2024 March Madness men's bracket
More than a quarter of completed brackets in theMen's Bracket Challenge Game this year chose the UConn Huskies to repeat as NCAA Division I men's basketball champions in the 2024 tournament. If the nation is correct, it would be the first time the tournament had a repeat champion since Florida did it in 2006 and 2007.
More than twice as many people picked UConn (26.09 percent) to win it all than the next two picks — Houston (10.94 percent) and North Carolina (9.9 percent). The Huskies rolled through the 2023 tournament as a No. 4 seed but entered the 2024 tournament as the No. 1 overall seed after a huge season that culminated in a Big East tournament championship.Another national title would give UConn its sixth NCAA title, which would tie with North Carolina for the third-most in Division I men's history behind Kentucky (eight) and UCLA (11).
UConn's 26 percent is a slight uptick from this past year when around 20 percent of brackets had Houston to win it all. At this point last year, UConn was the most-popular No. 4 see to win at 2.08 percent. That worked out well for that select group.
Here are a few other things to know:
- Unsurprisingly, the four No. 1 seeds were the top four most-picked teams to win. North Carolina and Houston eclipsed 10 percent, while Purdue ranked fourth with 7.85 percent.
- No. 3 Kentucky (6.41 percent) was picked to win more than three of the No. 2 seeds. Only No. 2 Arizona (6.58 percent) bettered Kentucky from the No. 2 seed line.
- Marquettewas the least-picked No. 2 seed at 2.04 percent.
- No. 5 San Diego State, the runner-up from 2023, ranked 22ndwith 0.37 percentof bracketsgoing with the Aztecs.
- No. 12 McNeesewas the only double-digit seed to approach the 1-percentmark with 0.88 percentof pickshaving theCowboys going all the way.
